‘CSI:Cyber’ Searches For A Missing Baby In ‘Kidnapping 2.0’

The FBI Cyber Crime Division is on the hunt for a kidnapper who hacked a baby monitor, in the series premiere of CSI: Cyber. (Major spoilers after the jump!)

According to CSI Files sources, “Kidnapping 2.0” opens in Baltimore, Maryland, where six-month-old Caleb Reynolds is sleeping peacefully in his crib. A hooded figure sneaks into his room, carefully lifting the baby out of the crib and carrying him away. A few moments later, Caleb’s mother wakes up in her bedroom, knowing that something is wrong. She hears a strange noise. Fran wakes her husband Steve, and then she looks over at the baby monitor—there’s no sign of Caleb. Steve rushes down the hallway toward the nursery, but he arrives to find that his worst nightmare has come true: his son is gone. The baby monitor sitting nearby is giving off the strange noise Fran heard, a cacophony of voices speaking different languages.

In Washington, DC, the FBI assigns the case to a pair of agents in the Major Crimes division, but Special Agent Avery Ryan intercepts the case folder. This is a job for the Cyber Crime Division. The Reynolds heard voices coming out of the baby monitor in Caleb’s room, and any case that starts electronically is under Ryan’s purview. The baby monitor is WiFi capable, which means it can be hacked—this was a cyber intrusion.

Ryan’s boss, Assistant Director Simon Sifter, tells her to use any resources necessary to bring Caleb home. One of those resources is Brody Nelson, aka “Baby Face”, a young hacker who was hired to join the Cyber Crime unit in order to avoid jail time. Ryan wants to use hackers to catch hackers, but if Nelson messes up, he’s going straight to prison.

Ryan and Nelson head into the Cyber Threat Operation Center, or CTOC, the heart of the Cyber Crime Division. The rest of the team is ready and waiting. They head to Baltimore to look at the crime scene and search for any cyber evidence that could help them catch their perpetrator, aka the “Node”. The local detective in charge isn’t thrilled to learn the FBI has sent computer specialists instead of regular agents, but Ryan’s team wastes no time getting to work.

Nelson and fellow tech genius Agent Daniel Krumitz look through the baby’s room, discovering that the kidnapper took the SD card out of the baby monitor. Downstairs, Agent Elijah Mundo finds scratches on the lock for the sliding glass door. Someone picked it, and it wasn’t easy—they’re looking for a pro. While speaking to the distraught parents about their son’s disappearance, Ryan realizes that Fran Reynolds is hiding something. On a hunch, she collects DNA samples from Fran and Steve, and she also finds a source of baby Caleb’s DNA to compare.
