Callaway: It’s Very Resonant
2 min readThe latest episode of CSI: New York introduced an intense personal storyline for Sid Hammerback (Robert Joy), raising doubts about the character’s future on the series. (Spoilers after the jump!)
In “Command+P”, Sid revealed to Jo Danville (Sela Ward) that he’d been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. With season nine more than halfway over, and the possibility of season ten still up in the air, Sid’s future is as unclear as the show’s future at this point in time. “As far as we’re concerned, Bob Joy is not going anywhere,” Co-Executive Producer Trey Callaway reassured TV Line. However, he added, “This is definitely a very different and personal struggle Sid is going to have to face—and he’s lucky to have a friend in Jo to support him through it.”
The “Guardian Angel” storyline was created to show the next part of Sid’s story after becoming a millionaire in season eight’s “The Ripple Effect”; the coroner wanted to use his money to help the families of victims who had come across his autopsy table. Executive Producer Pam Veasey, however, suggested that they should add an “extra, incredibly emotional” layer to the storyline. “We all love Sid—he’s certainly a beloved character—so it was one of those things that, from a writing standpoint, felt perfect,” Callaway shared. He added, “All of us know someone or have lost someone to some form of cancer, so it’s very resonant.”
