TV Line has a clip that continues from the scene above, which you can watch here. It also features Hotch and Luckinbill’s character.

“Mr Scratch” was directed by Gubler, who took part in a fan Q&A. You can watch the video below, including some comments about directing the show (starting at 7:00):

In addition to the clip posted above, TV Fanatic also spoke to Gubler about “Mr Scratch”. Here’s an excerpt:

TV Fanatic: I know you’ve directed on the show before, but this one you definitely seemed to get to do some different stuff, right?

Matthew Gray Gubler: I think every one of them I really tried to make different, unique and special. This one, of course, is a little more unrelenting in its pursuit of terrorizing the audience. I feel like that’s really my wheelhouse as director. The whole episode, Breen [Frazier, who penned the episode] and I wanted to present in a way as a magic trick, where you think something is one way and then it turns out to be something else and having the rug pulled out from you continually. It was the beginning of the teaser to the very end. I think it’s a really powerful piece, and a lot of that had to do with the writing.

Gubler and Executive Producer Erica Messer spoke to TV Guide about the episode, including this quote from Messer:

When Breen [Frazier, the writer] pitched the teaser, I was like, ‘I’m in!’ You’ve got victims who are also killers. That, to me, is such a cool way to do a Criminal Minds episode. Leave it to Breen to come up with something like that. We’re always looking to do something different and to me, that was different. It’s a psychological thriller because these people feel remorse. They aren’t killers in their nature at all, but they’ve become them. So the question is, how did that happen and who was the mastermind behind that?

TV Line also spoke to Gubler about “Mr Scratch”, and here’s an excerpt:

TVLINE |Why do you think the episodes you direct tend to be particularly unsettling?

You know, I try to approach directing from the most classic standpoint imaginable. A lot of my influences are from the old German expressionist films, and early film noir. I think it’s a slower-paced, more subjective, less gory style of directing, and that services our episodes really well. People will always be the most scared of what they can’t see, so doing that will always make these episodes extra creepy. Showing a bit of restraint is, I think, integral to good, spooky filmmaking.

TVLINE | Like, only show us the tips of the monster’s talons. Keep people guessing what the hell could possibly be around the corner.

Exactly.
