Executive Producer Erica Messer told TV Guide that Joy will return later in the season:

It will be a little bit of a thread throughout the year. It’s an unexpected connection and he’s navigating his way through it the best he can. We’ll pick up on it again in Episode 12. It’s nice, other layer to Rossi that will hopefully be refreshing and interesting.
