‘CSI:NY’ Explores The Experience Of ‘Living With Cancer’

Sid Hammerback (Robert Joy) is facing a longterm battle, while the fate of CSI: New York itself remains up in the air.

As CSI: NY revealed in last week’s episode, “Command+P”, the team’s resident coroner has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, Joy told Zap2It that the writers won’t be getting rid of Sid any time soon; instead, they want to explore “the potential of having someone on the team living with cancer.” He added, “I certainly know people living long lives with cancer, even though (their cases have been diagnosed as) ‘incurable,’ because there are so many treatments to extend and improve the quality of life.”

Sid’s storyline is part of the writers’ ongoing plan to explore the private lives of the team members. “I know it’s gratifying for them, but it’s also very generous to us as a cast,” Joy explained. “It’s almost like a gift. If we are coming to the end of the run, it’s a beautiful thing to do. Why go back to business as usual if we can keep doing new business?”

Last week, Sinise spoke to Zap2It as well, and he mentioned that the New York cast and crew have no idea whether the crime drama will be back next year. “We may find out something before May, and we may go right to the wire again, which is what we did last year,” Sinise revealed. “They called me an hour before it hit the Internet to say, ‘You’re coming back,’ and I assume it’ll be that way again this year.”
