One Victim’s Appearance Is Meant To Deceive On ‘CSI:NY’

4 min read

The eighteenth episode of CSI: New York’s seventh season finds the team searching for the truth about their victim as they hunt for her killer. (Major spoilers after the jump!)

According to CSI Files sources, episode 18 opens on the New York subway during the morning rush. An old man makes his way across a busy, crowded platform toward the waiting train. He moves slowly with the aid of a cane, holding a cigar box in one hand. He’s the last one to board, and there are no empty seats. Jo Danville’s daughter Ellie (Sydney Park, “Do Not Pass Go”) is on the train, and she gets up to offer the man her seat. He sits down, but he doesn’t respond or even say thank you.

A man named Jayson Luck (played by Taylor Kinney) makes his way over, pushing past commuters. It’s obvious he went out drinking the night before, and he stops when he’s standing over the old man. He starts to argue. Doesn’t the old man recognize him? He certainly recognizes the old man, and he’s angry. The old man keeps his head down, clutching the cigar box. Others watch the exchange, and Jayson ignores an onlooker who suggests he should leave the man alone. The pair of them are getting off at the next stop, Jayson says, and he doesn’t give the old man a chance to argue. He grabs his arm and drags him toward the door when the train stops at Penn Station in Midtown.

Once they’re out on the platform, the old man starts to struggle. He hits Jayson with his cane, leaving a small cut on his forehead. The crowd moves out of the way as the fight continues, and the old man drops his cigar box. The old man tries to hit Jayson with the cane again, but Jayson blocks it and yanks the man close to him. Ellie watches with horror as the scuffle turns deadly. A gun goes off, and the old man falls to the ground. Jayson runs away, pushing past the crowd as he flees the scene.

The CSIs launch an investigation, and they are surprised to discover that the victim is not an old man after all—she’s a young woman! Harvin Garrity identifies the victim as his wife, Nicole, and he’s shocked to find out that she’s dead. Nicole was a flight attendant, and he dropped her off at the airport so she could fly to Miami for work. She wasn’t even supposed to be in New York.

While Harvin tries to deal with his grief in the morgue, Flack pulls Mac aside to deliver some more surprising news. When he did a search for the victim’s maiden name, Nicole Wescott, he discovered that she has been using someone else’s identity. The real Nicole Wescott died 12 years ago. Either Harvin is lying, or he was clueless about the woman he married.

The lies are starting to pile up as the CSIs try to get to the bottom of this murder. Suspects also pile up when the reason for the victim’s disguise become clear. Nicole has been dressing up as an old man to con people out of their money. Some people lost only what was in their wallet, but others lost thousands of dollars to her scams. The team has to sift through Nicole’s victims to discover the identity of the man who returned the favor.

Meanwhile, Jo is having a pretty difficult day. First she discovers that her daughter is a murder witness, and then Ellie drops a bombshell on her: she wants to meet her biological mother. Ellie spoke to her older brother Tyler, and he let it slip that her biological mother is in jail. Tyler and Jo’s ex-husband Russ Josephson (David James Elliott, “To What End?”) come to the lab to make sure Ellie is okay after what happened on the subway platform. Tyler apologizes to his mother for telling Ellie about her biological mother, but Jo isn’t upset—she deserves to know the truth. They send Tyler to get Ellie and take her home, and Russ expresses his concern for Jo. They always knew this day would come, and Russ knows that Jo is scared. Despite her hesitation, Jo knows that letting Ellie meet her biological mother is the right thing to do.
