Pee-wee Returns Without Fishburne

1 min read

Paul Reubens will have a four-week run of The Pee-wee Herman Show in Los Angeles, California starting in January. However, original cast member Laurence Fishburne (Dr Ray Langston) will not appear in the show due to his role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Fishburne played Cowboy Curtis in the children’s show Pee-wee’s Playhouse for four episodes in 1986 and 1987, as well as a Christmas special that aired in 1988. “(Reubens) is really sweet,” Fishburne said. “I got this call from him; he was like, ‘Fish, I didn’t want you to hear it on the street that I’m doing the show and I had to have a Cowboy Curtis…I’m going to hire another guy to do it.’ He realized that because of my commitment to CSI, [it] wasn’t going to allow me to come and do the show.”

Although Fishburne won’t be in the live show next year, he’s open to reprising his role as Cowboy Curtis in a Pee-wee movie if the opportunity presents itself. “If he can get the money together to make another Pee-Wee movie, I will absolutely suit up, put on the jheri-curl, get the guitar,” he said. “I love him, he’s the real deal.”
