Harper: Volunteering Is Addictive
1 min readCSI: New York actor Hill Harper (Dr Sheldon Hawkes) is one of four actors who appear on the cover of the latest edition of USA Weekend Magazine to promote volunteering in honor of Make A Difference Day on Saturday, October 24.
Harper posed for the magazine cover with Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse), Nathan Fillion (Castle) and Hayden Panettiere (Heroes). As CSI Files previously reported, more than 60 television shows will feature volunteering as part of the iParticipate campaign starting on Monday, October 19. Television viewers will then get the chance to take action themselves during Make A Difference Day.
According to the official website, “Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others — a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.” Millions of people have participated in Make A Difference Day for nearly two decades: “In 2008, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.”
Harper learned about helping others as a child. He began serving the community while he was studying at Brown and Harvard Universities. “Make A Difference Day is fantastic,” the actor said. “That one day will multiply into many days because so many people will discover that volunteering is addictive.”
