Zuiker: Smaller Is Better For Season Four

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is set to concentrate on more intimate storytelling in its fourth season, executive producer Anthony Zuiker said recently.

"We're not going out into the world anymore," Zuiker told the New York Daily News (via Playing With Fire). "This past season was a success, but not one we're over the moon about. The show got a little big. It was science lite."

The Emmy-nominated writer-producer said he plans to reenergise CSI by taking the series back to its roots. "We need to get back to focusing on the characters and smaller stories that show the work to its best advantage."

CSI has ignited a crime show boom for CBS since its debut in fall 2000. CSI: Miami and Without a Trace will return in the fall after very successful freshman seasons, and are set to be joined by Cold Case and the JAG spin-off Navy CIS.

"It's just part of the business that there'll be more shows like CSI," said Zuiker, who is himself working on a third CSI incarnation (story). The producer added, "I do fear too many crime shows will dilute the speciality of the CSI franchise."
