Les Moonves Plans To Get CBS Into Movie Business
By CarolinaJune 26, 2006 - 12:21 PM
CBS president Les Moonves announced recently he wishes to branch the network out so it starts producing movies.
Moonves first admitted, however, the company doesn't want to pursue big budget projects. "As long as we're smart, and we don't look to do Superman or $125 million movies," Moonves said, the plan could work. "When you look at the Academy Award nominees from last year -- be it Capote, Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck, or Brokeback Mountain -- they all fit into that range, and we think we can make a real business of it using our assets."
CBS would not get involved with the distribution of said movies, but would put down the money for the production, and in some cases oversee the production of said films themselves. The network would then air these films and get part of the profit.
Moonves is pretty confident the plan could work. "I come from the world of filmed entertainment," he added. "It's a lot closer to have done ER and CSI and Friends to (making) movies than some of the other companies that are out there. We know how to do this."
