CBS Wins The Season

CBS won the 2008-2009 television season by posting gains in overall viewers.

CBS has taken the top spot for six out of the past seven years. It was the only broadcast network to post gains in overall viewers, increasing 11% from last season. CBS averaged 11.76 million viewers thanks to popular shows like the CSI franchise, NCIS, Two and a Half Men and newcomer The Mentalist. Fox was second with 9.8 million (down 13%). ABC (8.95 million) and NBC (7.84 million) were both down 3% from last year.

Fox came out ahead of CBS among adults 18-49, which is the age group most prized by advertisers. Fox had an average 3.6 rating/ 10 share, CBS had 3.1/8, ABC pulled in 2.9/8, and NBC had 2.8/7. Even though CBS came in second, it was the only network to post gains in the key demo. CBS was up 3%, but Fox (16%) and ABC (3%) were down. NBC had no change from last year in the demo.

During May sweeps, CBS posted the win with an average of 10.86 million viewers. Fox had 9.28 million viewers on average, ABC had 8.78 million, and NBC had 6.1 million. Like the season overall, Fox came out on top in the key demo with 3.3/10.
