Hello World!

Johnny Depp as sexiest man alive? Okay, People, I'll buy that...he's smart, he's witty, he's not afraid to criticize the U.S. government and (since this is always far more relevant to People than what a man actually looks, talks or smells like) he had a major box office hit this summer.

And, you know, I liked Pirates of the Caribbean. I saw it twice. I probably would have seen it even without Depp just to see Orlando Bloom wave a sword around, but that's neither here nor there. It was fun and energetic and, um, quite silly.

Which brings me to my real question: Why aren't more people raving about Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World? I've never read the books so I can't draw comparisons, but I absolutely loved the film!

The cinematography is breathtaking, the acting is first-rate, and the story, while not packing in as much action frame by frame, is engrossing and emotional. Plus the nautical details are amazing...okay, so there were some plot points that stretched credulity like the amount of clothing and lumber apparently stored on the Surprise, but compared to the animated skeletons in POTC this seems a minor quibble.

I liked Gladiator as much as the Academy but I've never been a Russell Crowe fan until last week. Go see M&C. Now that's sexy.
