Hello World!
It's been a particularly hot summer, with records tumbling in Brisbane yesterday as the mercury hit 41 degrees C for the first time. Even seemingly ordinary tasks, like walking up to the shops, have become trying.
Last week I was in a second-hand bookshop, which unlike many chain stores in the larger shopping centres, did not have air-conditioning. The only cooling devices were ceiling fans, which weren't in every row. When I was standing on a crate to look at some books in the top row, I could feel the sweat streaming down my face, stinging my eyes.
This past weekend I escaped to an air-conditioned shopping mall -- the books weren't as good, but at least I could walk around without working up a sweat. Cinemas were also a popular refuge; I went to see Timeline, an enjoyable escapist film.
Things are going to start cooling off tomorrow, it seems -- a good thing too, because I have to use public transport, and not all the council buses are air-conditioned.
