Gary Dourdan (Warrick Brown) yesterday inked a deal to star in the independent feature film Black August.
The CSI: Crime Scene Investigation actor will play the lead role of George Jackson, an activist who campaigned for the rights of African-Americans, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Jackson was incarcerated in Soledad prison as a teenager for stealing $71 from a gas station, with a judge giving him a sentence of "one year to life". Despite annual review hearings, he was never given parole, and spent his time trying to raise awareness of injustices in the prison system, even penning a book, entitled Soledad Brother. In August 1971, Jackson was killed by prison guards for his alleged role in a riot.
Samm Styles, whose credits include M2K: Gospel 2000 and numerous music videos, will direct Black August. Principal production on the film is slated to begin in the Bay Area in late October. No release date has been announced.
