CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will kick off its fourth season with a killer surprise, according to executive producer Carol Mendelsohn.

"One of the biggest surprises of the new season will be in the first episode," Mendelsohn told TV Guide's Michael Ausellio at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Press tour. "There's a reason that that episode is entitled 'Assume Nothing'. All I can say is no one should leave their La-Z-Boy [recliner] during the last five minutes."

One of the hot topics at the TCA tour was the likelihood of another CSI spin-off hitting the airwaves. "That's way down-the-line talk, at least two, three years from now," said CSI and CSI: Miami creator Anthony Zuiker. The writer has previously indicated he already has a lead actor and city lined up in his mind for a new instalment of the forensics franchise (story).

With both CSI and CSI: Miami bona fide ratings successes — not to mention a hit with Emmy voters (story) — there is likely to be another spin-off series sooner rather than later. Of course, if CBS president Les Moonves had his way, the CSI franchise would never stop.

"Law & Order did three [series]," he told reporters. "We could do five. Before I leave here, there's going to be CSI Monday through Friday at 10 pm. What do you think?"
