'CSI' Shut Out At Emmys

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was defeated for the Best Drama Emmy Award last night by The Sopranos at the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, televised from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which presented the Emmys, honored HBO with a total of 16 trophies. The Sopranos won all four major categories for which it was nominated - drama, supporting actor, supporting actress and writing. CSI had also been nominated for four Emmys including Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, the Makeup for a Series (Non-Prosthetic) and the Single-Camera Sound Mixing. At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 12th, the show was defeated in each of those categories {story}.

However, the CSI franchise was well-represented at the Primetime Awards ceremony, with trophies handed out by William Petersen, Dennis Franz, Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes. The West Wing's long run as dramatic series champion ended this year, but Allison Janney won her fourth Emmy for her role as C.J. Cregg on the show. NBC's Frasier, wrapping its final season, also did well, taking home Emmys for best actor and supporting actor in a comedy series. CBS won the Emmy for Best Reality-Competition Program for The Amazing Race but otherwise had a disappointing night.

But HBO ruled the night, with its Angels in America taking home awards for Best Miniseries and for many of its actors as well as its director and writer. FOX's Arrested Development surprised many analysts by taking home its first award for Best Comedy Series.
