Giovinazzo: How Baseball Got Him Into Acting
By CarolinaOctober 17, 2005 - 2:10 AM
Carmine Giovinazzo (Danny Messer) recently told CBS that it if weren't for baseball, he never would've gotten into acting.
"I was playing baseball and I hurt my back, so I couldn't do that anymore," the actor explained. "And after going a little crazy, trying to figure out what I wanted to do, I found myself running around New York City, sending out headshots. I was always into that venue; I was making small films with a video camera, and playing characters, so it just kinda happened naturally."
The actor also took the opportunity to talk more about his CSI: New York character, Danny Messer, whose past will be unveiled further this season. "We're still finding out who he is. I only have to work with what these scenes can tell on the show and I think it's growing into being a bit more revealing about who he is," he said. "His father may have been involved in the mafia and he decided to do the right thing and take the straight route and become what he's become [...] he comes from that world, but now he's living on the other side, so it's a really good duality for him to have."
Giovinazzo is trying to get to know his character better and get used to the fast pace of television, which isn't easy to get used to. "It's always hectic and intense with more of the crew and everybody's busting their ass, setting up the next shot and get going," he said. "But everybody gets along, so it's really good."
When Giovinazzo is not on the set of New York he's working on his other projects; he's revealed being a fan of writing. "There's one script that I've written called The Brink of Black, which I'm actually not going to direct, but I did write, and I do wanna get in that position of making my own projects and doing that."
