In the first CSI episode of February sweeps, entitled "Killer," the team must find a man who is responsible for two deaths.

Erwin Nash is in the middle of a slumber when he's awoken by someone kicking on his bed. Nash recognizes the man sitting there as "Red." The two haven't seen each other in a long time, and as Nash starts to tell his midnight visitor something important, Red takes out a handgun and shoots him dead. Red, otherwise known as Karl Ross, flees into the night. Careful not to draw attention to himself, he follows all the traffic rules. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean other drivers are doing the same, and as Karl stops at a red light another car collides into his own.

Ally Sullivan, a young, party girl, steps out of her car and offers to call the police, claiming her insurance will cover for both cars. But after killing someone, the last thing Karl wants is an encounter with the police. Ally insists; her father always told her to call the police if she got into an accident. Karl, however, is more recalcitrant than her and with good reason. He gets into his car to drive away, but when he sees Ally flip open her cell phone and start tapping a few numbers, there's nothing Ally can say or do to save her life.

The CSIs, unaware of Nash's death, investigate Ally's death as if it were a hit and run. They find a fingerprint in a cup inside her car and the results come back to Trent Silver, another party soul. Brass interrogates Trent, and isn't shy to bring up the young man's reputation for being a rapist. Trent, however, clarifies he's not a rapist. He's a day rapist. Apparently, there's a difference. Brass is not amused. Trent claims Ally merely gave him a ride home last night. They're friends, or more specifically, text messaging pals. According to Trent, Ally preferred text messaging over phone calls.

After hearing Trent's interrogation Grissom gets an idea. He re-taps the numbers Ally had dialed just before her death to come up with the letters YKA. Could they be part of Karl Ross's license plate? Before they can investigate a call comes in: it looks like Nash's body has been found. The evidence, as it always does, will soon suggest the two murders are connected, but it's only when the pieces of the puzzle start coming together that the CSIs realize they're dealing with a professional. Not only is Karl Ross a killer on the run, he also has a wife and a young daughter. The CSIs promptly get to them but it might be too late: according to his wife, Karl is already on his way to Canada.
