Paul Guilfoyle On The Emotions Behind 'A Bullet...'

Paul Guilfoyle (Cpt. Jim Brass) recently talked to CBS's The Early Show about the episode "A Bullet Runs Through It" and the acting challenges behind it.

In the episode, a shootout ends with the death of a cop and the evidence suggests friendly fire. Guilfoyle said filming the shootout scene was overwhelming. "There's a lot of gunfire, there's a lot of chasing of bad guys and stunts, and a lot of stuff you see in a feature film, really, that we worked on, worked very hard, and got lucky, really, to be able to get the production value out of it. It looks great."

The episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, Guilfoyle said, going from exhilaration to melancholy. "The challenge for me, particularly, was people you work with, maybe, you know, lost their lives in their job. And while you're describing them, trying to be scientific and precise, often times you find an emotional unraveling that combines with it. And that's the kind of double, uh, event that was going on, certainly for my character."

Co-star George Eads (Nick Stokes) also ran into some challenges while filming "A Bullet..." particularly with his Spanish accent. The actor said he was surprised when he saw the Spanish lines in the script. "I had forgotten that I had asked for my character to be bilingual," he said. "I don't speak fluent Spanish. I took it in college. But I got to the set and realized that my dialogue was in Spanish. And, so, I had a crash course in my Spanish 101."

The first part of "A Bullet Runs Through It" was watched by roughly 30 million people, making it one of the highest rated CSI episodes to date. William Petersen (Gil Grissom) told Entertainment Tonight it's the viewers that make the show what it is.

"You just thank the fans," he said. "We try and do our best and we appreciate the fact that they watch. We will never understand why so many people watch, but I don't think that is our job. Our job is to just do what we do and they seem to embrace it. It is a really nice relationship. We go around the country when we're off and everybody's pretty positive. It is a nice reaction."
