'CSI: Miami' Staff Describe Their Roles On Set
By CarolinaDecember 13, 2005 - 8:49 PM
Corey Miller, executive story sditor and writer for CSI: Miami, has interviewed John Refoua, editor of the show, about his role behind the scenes of the show.
Refoua said that in a nutshell, his job is, "to tell a story," he replied. "In other words, the story has to go from a paper format to a film format. The director shoots what shots they think are best to tell the story that was in the script. The editor then takes all these shots and puts it together in an order that will tell the story that was first told in the script."
But telling a story is not as simple as it sounds, Refoua, especially when everyone's vision is different. "The most challenging aspect of my job is when the director's vision and the writer's do not merge," he said, and added that the worst part is, "There is not much glamour in watching the same footage over and over from every angle and worrying about adding a frame here and taking a frame there. Once the basic show is put together, then it's more like watching a regular TV show."
Miller later interviewed First Assistant Director Marco Black, who clarified some rumors about what his job entails. "The biggest misconception is that we push the directors along and tell them what to do... we are really as the name implies... the director's assistant. We serve the directors, not the other way around."
Like Refua, Blank also mentioned his least favorite thing about being first assistant director. "All of the unseen work we do late into the night that no one notices! We are literally sometimes like the stuntman that does the high fall, which the actor then gets all the credit for."
