Gary Dourdan (Warrick Brown) takes on a very different role.
The CSI: Crime Scene Investigation actor plays the lead role in Black August. The movie, which will be released on DVD next month, tells the story of prison activist George L. Jackson. Arrested in Los Angeles for a $70.00 gas station robbery, Jackson was given a sentence of one year to life in prison.
While behind bars, Jackson penned a series of letters that were collected and published in a book called Soledad Brother. The letters described the racism and brutality faced by prisoners, and the book became a bestseller. Jackson was an icon of the prisoners' rights movement in the 1960s, and his philosophy inspired the militant civil rights movement and the development of the Black Guerilla Family.
Black August chronicles the final 14 months of Jackson's life, leading up to his death in the prison yard of San Quentin during an alleged escape attempt. More information about the movie, including a plot synopsis, can be read at the IMDb page. The DVD will be released in time for Black History Month with a street date of February 19.
