William Friedkin joins the investigation.
Friedkin last worked with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's William Petersen (Gil Grissom) on the 1985 film To Live and Die in LA, the movie which helped to launch Petersen's career. "Every year [Petersen] says to me, 'Why don't you do a show for me,' and so I made the time to do it," Friedkin explained to Seattle PI. "It was terrific — I really did it for the opportunity to work with Billy again."
The episode, "Cockroaches", marked the first time Friedkin and Petersen worked together since To Live and Die in LA, but the episode itself did not focus on Grissom. Instead, Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan) was featured as the CSI dealt with some personal problems. "[Dourdan] is just wonderful in it," Friedkin said. "He touches a lot of very sensitive areas."
"Cockroaches" was written with Friedkin in mind. "I got a ton of notes from Standards and Practices," he said. "I was surprised, frankly." Friedkin did not consciously try to put his own spin on the episode. "It's a top-rated show…. It's not broke and they didn't call me in to fix it." Friedkin said that there weren't many differences between directing a film and a television show, but he pointed out that working on a show like CSI means "you have to do things a lot faster."
