Real-Life CSI Field Trip Goes Awry In Florida

By Carolina
June 7, 2006 - 4:17 PM

A CSI field trip in Florida turned badly when the students actually unearthed a real dead body.

The field trip was a part of the St Thomas Aquinas High School crime scene investigation class, which took students to a Fort Lauderdale park, where their teacher had scattered a few forensic clues – including fake skeletons, fake weapons, bullet casings and sunglasses – for the students to find an analyze. Instead, the students found a real dead body.

16 year old Josh Rozental thought originally it was all part of the experience. "I thought it was fake," he said. "I just thought it was like a really good wax hand or something. So I got the rest of our group and we got the camera. And my friend Billy Spreitzer came over and he didn't think it was fake, so he touched it and he turned very pale very fast."

That is when their teacher intervened and stopped the class. "When I went over, knowing what I know about rigor mortis and postmortem lividity, it was apparent to me that actually this was a deceased individual," she said. "So the biggest thing is I wanted them to move off ... I knew there was going to be an investigation and I just wanted them to back off and for us to not to disturb anything."

The body was identified as a homeless man that had merely ceased in the area. According to the police, there were no signs of foul play.

Rozental described the experience as exciting. "I've never seen a dead body before, so at first we were just in denial because we just thought it was fake," he said. "After we found out it was real, it was disturbing. Just finding a dead body in a fake crime scene."
