Post-‘NYPD: Blue’ Caruso Talks About His Career

By Deborah
October 6, 2006 - 12:15 AM

In 1993, David Caruso was all over newspapers and magazines as the breakout star of the controversial new show NYPD Blue. He left after only one season to pursue a film career that stalled. Now he’s on top again as the lead in the most watched television show in the world.

Even before NYPD Blue premiered, it was surrounded by publicity. Foul language and partial nudity had conservative coalitions up in arms. All the publicity made the show’s lead, relative unknown David Caruso, a star before the show even aired. “The show was going to be about David,” says producer Bill Clark. “He was No. 1 on the call sheet.”

However, Caruso wanted a big screen career. He ego got the best of him and he was off the show after only one season. NYPD Blue continued on for an amazing 13 year run. Caruso has no regrets though.

“Sometimes you get an opportunity, and you’re in the middle of everything, and you can’t really see through it all. I had some time off, the ability to mature and appreciate it when CSI happened,” says Caruso.

Caruso’s performance in Proof of Life caught the attention of Les Moonves. When it came time to cast Lt. Horatio Caine, Caruso was at the top of the list.

“I met with the senior producers of CSI, and it immediately became obvious to me how much I wanted to work with them. They were telling really unique stories and creating such a hypnotic world, one that you can’t walk away from,” recalls Caruso.

Caruso has connected with the Miami fans and formed a relationship with them. “It all feels pretty great,” he says. “Your relationship with the viewer is intimate, and I understand that.”
