Lt. Dan Rocks Hawaii

Gary Sinise (Mac Taylor) of CSI:NY took an another role this past weekend when he and his band the Lt. Dan Band entertained Marines during a special USO concert on Saturday afternoon at Marine Corps Base Hawai’I at Kane’ohe Bay.

Sinise’s plays bass in the 11-piece Lt. Dan Band, named for the actor’s Academy Award nominated role in the movie Forrest Gump. Sinise co-founder the band with guitarist James Kimo Williams, with whom he worked in Chicago for the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Their association with the USO began in 2003.

If performing in a band seems an unlikely diversion for a television and film actor, Sinise reminds everyone that he began as a stage performer. “I’ve done a lot of live theater,” he said. “But now that I’m on television, I can’t do it. I’ve got a full time job with CSI:NY. I can’t get up on stage and act in a play. Going out with the band these days is kind of my theater fix.”

Sinise strongly supports the military. “After September 11th, I, like a lot of people, felt a lot of different types of emotions because of that event. Prior to that, I’d been involved for many, many years in Vietnam veterans groups,” said Sinise. His performances are his way to thank the troops. “We greatly appreciate people like him,” says Marine corporal David Walsh.
