Robert David Hall: 'I'm Playing My Father'
By CarolinaOctober 4, 2005 - 9:56 PM
Robert David Hall (Dr. Al Robbins) recently visited Craig Ferguson at the Late Late Show to tell the world he's actually a fun guy.
The actor revealed he's not as serious as his CSI persona and has to personify a close relative in order to portray his role convincingly. "I'm playing my father, my late father, when I'm playing [Doc Robbins]," Hall said. "It's funny when people tap me as an authority figure, cause I still feel 18 inside this body. My dad was a serious guy."
Prior to joining CSI, Hall went through a myriad of jobs, looking for his one passion. "I was a morning DJ at a radio station in Orange County, I was an ad writer for an ad agency, I studied acting, and I played guitar in a bar at night. So basically I was the guy who didn't know what the hell he wanted to be."
But he's serious about his career as an actor, so serious he's done his research well. "I've met a number of coroners and I'm glad I'm an actor," Hall joked. "I've actually attended an autopsy or two. The coroner in Las Vegas wanted to see if he could get me to fall over and he invites me in and there were a bunch of medical students and two of them keeled over. But if CSI was on smell-o-vision we wouldn't be number one."
Hall confessed he comes from a long line of lawyers and doctors, making him, the actor, the black sheep of the family. "Acting is kind of a silly career choice, but if you gotta do it, you gotta do it."
