Hello World!

Every year for the past five, I have gotten up on Halloween and put on my Captain Janeway uniform. On Halloween, I do not need to worry overmuch about jokes about jury duty.

This year, however, I went as a witch. This is partly because of the influence of Harry Potter (though I fear that I probably look more like Professor Umbridge than any of the other adult witches we've read about) and partly because I didn't feel like getting into a discussion this year of the fact that yeah, I'm a Trekkie and my mom is a Trekkie and my husband and I started dating in the midst of fighting over who should get to review Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home for our college newspaper.

My children, in turn, went out as some kind of fantasy ninja and a red-faced demon. They would have liked to have dressed up as Legolas and Boromir, complete with bow and arrow and sword and shield, but the school has a strict rule about no weapons in the Halloween parade, and what's the fun of being in Lord of the Rings if you don't get a cool weapon?

If I dressed as a Tolkien character, I'd have to be a hobbit, as I am far below the height requirement for elves. Also, the only thing Liv Tyler and I have in common is brown hair. But my husband did give me an Evenstar pendant as an anniversary present. Somehow I feel that this is even more geeky than dating because of Star Trek.
