Ben Browder, who has been absent from television since the Sci Fi Channel's abrupt decision to cancel Farscape, discovered that there are some differences between the Australian-based science fiction show and CSI: Miami, on which he appears as a guest star on Monday night: "First off, there were no aliens."
But there were also some similarities, Browder admitted in an interview with Zap2it. "I felt really at home as soon as the special effects started breaking out and burning things," he said. "I thought, 'I'm home.'"
Browder appears in the episode "Tinder Box" as Danny Maxwell, a bouncer at a Florida nightclub ravaged by fire. Forensic investigator Horatio Caine leads the team to determine the cause of the incident. Asked whether his character is an arson suspect, Browder replied, "I'm not a cop, and if I'm not a cop, and I'm not part of the science team or anything, I'm a suspect."
Browder said that he had had trouble returning to the grind of auditioning after more than four years on Farscape and admitted that he was disappointed with the range of available roles — mostly characters who are lawyers and police officers — after several seasons on a character-oriented show. Yet he found it "intellectually stimulating" to be in a different kind of environment on CSI: Miami.
As previously reported, former Star Trek: Voyager star Robert Beltran also appears in "Tinder Box". Browder, who unlike Beltran speaks nostalgically of the science fiction series which earned him a huge fan base, said that it is possible that Farscape may return someday but he doesn't know how or when.
"The topic arises occasionally, but usually it's a discussion about what form we would do, not anything concrete," he said.
